What Does Error Code 4-6 Actually Mean?
On most modern LiftMaster, Chamberlain, or Craftsman openers, the “up” arrow will flash 4 times and the “down” arrow will flash 6 times. This is the system’s way of telling you that the safety sensors are misaligned or the wires are broken.
Your opener is designed to protect your family and your car. If the “eyes” at the bottom of the tracks can’t see each other, the motor won’t close the door. It’s a safety feature, not a bug, but it sure is annoying when you’re trying to leave for work. When the system detects a 4-6 error, it assumes there is a person or a pet in the way. It shuts down the closing cycle as a fail-safe.
Step 1: Check for Obstructions
Before you grab the toolbox, look at the floor. It sounds simple, but a leaf, a cobweb, or a stray trash can is often the culprit. We’ve even seen cases where a spider decided to spin a web directly over the sensor lens.
Clean both lenses with a soft cloth. If the small LED light on the receiving sensor (usually the green one) is flickering or out, the beam is blocked. Even a thin layer of Naperville dust or road salt can be enough to trigger a false positive on the safety system.
Step 2: Realignment and “Ghost” Signals
The sensors are held in place by metal brackets that can get bumped by a lawnmower or a recycling bin.
- Loosen the wing nut on the bracket.
- Move the sensor until the LED light glows solid.
- Tighten the nut back down.
But here is the problem: sometimes the light looks solid, but it’s actually “vibrating” because of a loose bracket. When the motor starts, the vibration breaks the connection, and the door reverses. This is what we call a ghost signal. Make sure those brackets are tightened down hard. If your tracks are shaky, a simple alignment won’t hold. Step 3: The Technical Deep Dive into Wiring

LiftMaster systems use a two-wire system: a solid white wire and a white wire with a black stripe. These are thin, “bell-grade” wires that are very fragile.

- The Staple Trap: Often, the original installer used a staple gun to run the wires along the wall. If a staple was driven too deep, it eventually cuts through the wire as the house settles. You’ll see a 4-6 code because the “pulse” from the motor never reaches the sensor.
If you find a break, you can strip the wires and twist them back together with a wire nut, but this is a temporary fix. Moisture will get into that connection and cause another failure within months.
Step 4: Testing the Logic Board
If you’ve checked the sensors and the wires but the light is still flashing 4-6, you need to test the “head” of the motor.
To do this, take one sensor off the bracket, cut the wire to about 12 inches long, and wire it directly into the back of the opener. If the sensor light turns on, your motor is fine, and you simply have a broken wire somewhere in your walls. If the sensor light stays off even when wired directly to the motor, your logic board is fried.
